Other Useful Information*

FEMA Advice:

(Reposted. Lessons learned based on advice from a FEMA adjuster visit)

1. You cannot cut more than 2 feet of sheetrock until the adjuster shows up.

2. The water line on the walls must be visible (do not cut above the water line if it’s less than 2 feet)

3. You may remove flooring, but you must leave a section of flooring in each room

4. Any furniture you are going to make a claim for must stay in the house

5. Any item you are going to make a claim for cannot be thrown away. It must be kept so the adjuster can look at it, touch it, see it

6. The pictures you take of the items in which you are going to make a claim for has to be horizontal (due to their computer program)

7. When you take a picture, it must show the water damage, the brand of the item and if possible the model number

8. Don’t leave claim items out in the elements. You have to show you took steps to preserve the item. Right now we have things in garbage bags with a tarp over it. The adjuster didn’t seem to have a problem with it

9. You will be sent a spreadsheet that contains the following fields-item, quantity, brand, serial number, item description, item age, room, item condition, cost to replace (pre-tax).

Home Inspection:

This is Alex Mathew with American House Inspection. I am a state licensed home inspector.

If you have been impacted by Harvey, please keep in mind:

a) Never go into a flood-damaged home until the utility company, fire department, or a licensed electrician has removed the home’s electrical meter from its socket.  Or, minimum turn off the main power from the house.  Please keep in mind, DO NOT do this while there is water on the ground, you can be electrocuted.

b) DO NOT flush the toilet or operate any plumbing fixtures.

c) Mold can develop within 24 to 48 hours of a flood.  Mold is often not visible and can be hidden behind the sheetrock or studs.

As a courtesy, we can check your flooded home before you or your loved one moves back for FREE.  Please call American House Inspection (832)685.8498

Automobile Disaster Relief Program:

Freedom Automotive & Collisions has introduced an Automobile Relief program for our community to make use during this time of disaster.

Water in your car can create havoc – especially the engine, electrical system, and interior.

If your car was flooded more than halfway up its wheels, follow these steps to assess and address the damage:

1. Do not attempt to start the car! It’s tempting to turn the key and see if the car still works, but if there is water in the engine, attempting to start it could damage it beyond repair.

2. Call us and we will get it towed (or bring your car) to our expert ASE and I-CAR certified mechanics here at Freedom Automotive & Collision.

What Freedom Automotive & Collision will do:

1. We will determine how deep the car was submerged.

2. We will check the oil, air cleaner, engine, fluids, electrical  and mechanic systems, wheels and tires.

3. If the car is damaged, we will push to have the car totaled. A flood-damaged car can experience problems months or even years after the event.

4. We will call your insurance company and fight with them. Flood damage is generally covered by comprehensive insurance. Your insurance company will probably be overflowing with claims. Let us take that trouble off your shoulders.

Replacing it will cost money, but you may save yourself from some major (and expensive) headaches down the road.
